Forthcoming Events

April’s Coffee Morning is next Sunday 8th April from 10 o’clock until midday. We moved it from the first Sunday in the month because of Easter, future coffee mornings are always the first Sunday of the month. Therefore , May’s coffee morning will be 6th May! All the details of this and other events can be found in the Events  & Social Calendar.

There is also a Working Party this coming weekend . Following the success of our Working Party in February we are now running Working Parties on both days at the weekends. So if you can come on either day, all volunteers will be most welcome and the kettle in the Clubhouse will reward you! Start time on both days is 10:00am.

We would also like to remind you of our trip  to RHS Wisley in June. The cost (£15) is purely to cover the coach, entry is free as members of the Society. Offer is now open to members, their family and friends. Full details are in this link to our poster

Wisley Poster

or from events@hawkingeallotments.org.uk

Spaces are limited, so please do book early.

Coffee Morning

A short reminder that our first Coffee Morning of the year is being held  this coming Sunday, 4th March from 10:00am until Midday. We obviously have no idea what the weather will be doing by then, but you can be assured of a warm welcome, hot tea and coffee and a bacon buttie to cheer you!

One important fact you need to be aware of, is that the codes for the gates will be changed during the course of the Coffee Morning. An email with the new code will be sent to you separately later in the week. If you have any problems with the gate and the padlocks please contact a member of the committee.

Nick Lord, Chairman.

Christmas Glow at Wisley

As promised we have at last some information on the Christmas Glow at the RHS Wisley, here is a link to their website:

https://www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/wisley/whats-on/Christmas-Glow-at-Wisley

One of our members Pat Meloy has offered to co-ordinate a trip to see the gardens and the lights and we are suggesting the following programme for the trip, which will take place on Friday 15th                December 2017.

Coach to leave Hawkinge at 12 o’clock midday.

Arrive at RHS Wisley at approx. 2pm (subject to traffic)

Entry to Wisley is free to HAS Members and their friends and Family, normal it would cost £14.00 each. You then have free time to explore the gardens in daylight and later in the dark when parts of the garden are lit up, have something to eat or drink in one of the café/restaurants and investigate the shop.

We expect to leave at around 6 to 6:30pm and on the way home call in at a Fish and Chip shop in Lenham for supper, arriving back in Hawkinge somewhere between 9 and 10pm.

We have provisionally booked a 30 seater coach and we have costed it out that we need to charge each passenger £20.00 which will include a contribution towards the F & C Supper. There is a contingency there, so if we do not make 30 people we can go down to a 16 seater minibus. The charge will be the same, however the contribution to the supper will be reduced quite significantly.

If you would like to join the trip then could you please email Pat at the following address:

patricia.meloy467@btinternet.com

Pat will give you details of how you can pay, cash or bank transfer, once seats are booked and paid for and the trip is confirmed we cannot offer any refunds unfortunately.

To secure our booking on the coach we have to confirm the booking by next weekend, so please let Pat know asap if you would like to come along. If you have any further questions please contact Pat directly.

Warning

Further to my post regarding the missing incinerator, I have now had reported to me that a member who has raised beds has had all his pumpkins pilfered. The is very disappointing for the family as the children were looking forward to harvesting their pumpkins for Halloween. It is also another cause for concern that something else has gone missing from someone ‘s plot. Please therefore be vigilant around the site, it is impossible to tackle strangers because they may well be new members and we have quite a few right now, and we would not want members involved in any sort of confrontation where they are at risk. However, please make sure gates are closed when you are on site and locked securely if you are the last to leave and report any losses or anything suspicious to a member of the committee.

Thank you.

Nick

Missing Incinerator

Our member, James on plot 43b, (The very last plot, opposite the Copse on the South side) is giving up his plot and has been tidying it up ready for the next new member. Sadly he has reported that his incinerator that was sitting on his plot has disappeared. If you can shed some light on where it might have gone, please can you contact me via the following link:

Thank you

Working Party & Harvest Lunch

We have checked the weather forecast for Saturday and it does not look good, heavy rain and high winds. We have therefore taken the decision to cancel the plans for the Working Party and Lunch as there was little likelihood of being able to do any work on site. We are sorry for having to make this decision and although it is still a couple of days away we had to consider arrangements for food and make the decision early.

Chris our Site Manager has a list of jobs that need to be done around the site and is wanting to co-ordinate the work, however as the weather is starting to become very unpredictable, we cannot allocate another date for the working party. Therefore if you can contact Chris he will allocate individuals a task that they can carry out at their convenience when they are next on site. Chris’s email address is sitemanager@hawkingeallotments.org.uk

Thank you.

Compost, Chippings and Working Party/Harvest Lunch

If you have been on site in the last week you will have seen that we have had deliveries of compost, located at either end of the site now. Yesterday we also had a delivery of wood chippings which is ideal material for pathways etc. We are very fortunate that these supplies are donated to the Society and so you as members are able to take advantage of these FREE materials. There is no guarantee that there will always be a supply of free compost etc and we are very lucky to have the contacts with the local horse owners and farmers who supply and deliver it.

I am sure everyone appreciates it and I hope if you can, you have signed up for the Harvest Lunch on SATURDAY (21st October) and the Working Party that will be going on around the lunch. The full details have already been published on previous posts and on Facebook. It is not too late to order your lunch, check back on previous posts for the menu and email the Secretary with you order.

The committee look forward to seeing you on Saturday and appreciate your support.

Membership renewal

Our treasurer, Dawn, will soon be preparing your bill for 2018, there is no need to worry about payment just yet, it is not due until you actual receive the account. However, we would ask all members to let us know sooner rather than later if they do not intend to continue with their plot next year. We have had several resignations in the last couple of weeks and it is always sad to see people moving on for whatever the reason. In some cases it is people moving away, or circumstances in their life have changed and they are unable to carry on with an allotment. Sometimes we only find out this information when we enquire or when we start the Abandoned Plots Policy because a plot is becoming neglected. As a management committee, we have busy lives too and don’t always have the ability to email and/or phone members who are not tending their plots as well as all the other duties we have to perform.

So, please if you are struggling with you plot, for whatever reason, please let a member of the committee know at the earliest opportunity and if we can help we will and if we know there is a problem we are at least aware of it and can act accordingly. And if you are thinking of leaving, please let us know as soon as possible.

While we have your attention, time to remind you that this Sunday, 1st October, is our last Coffee Morning of the year. So please come and join us if you can, the weather forecast is not great, it is at least dry in the Clubhouse and there will be cake! From 10am to 12 noon.

Thank you

Nick
