Christmas Glow at Wisley

As promised we have at last some information on the Christmas Glow at the RHS Wisley, here is a link to their website:

One of our members Pat Meloy has offered to co-ordinate a trip to see the gardens and the lights and we are suggesting the following programme for the trip, which will take place on Friday 15th                December 2017.

Coach to leave Hawkinge at 12 o’clock midday.

Arrive at RHS Wisley at approx. 2pm (subject to traffic)

Entry to Wisley is free to HAS Members and their friends and Family, normal it would cost £14.00 each. You then have free time to explore the gardens in daylight and later in the dark when parts of the garden are lit up, have something to eat or drink in one of the café/restaurants and investigate the shop.

We expect to leave at around 6 to 6:30pm and on the way home call in at a Fish and Chip shop in Lenham for supper, arriving back in Hawkinge somewhere between 9 and 10pm.

We have provisionally booked a 30 seater coach and we have costed it out that we need to charge each passenger £20.00 which will include a contribution towards the F & C Supper. There is a contingency there, so if we do not make 30 people we can go down to a 16 seater minibus. The charge will be the same, however the contribution to the supper will be reduced quite significantly.

If you would like to join the trip then could you please email Pat at the following address:

Pat will give you details of how you can pay, cash or bank transfer, once seats are booked and paid for and the trip is confirmed we cannot offer any refunds unfortunately.

To secure our booking on the coach we have to confirm the booking by next weekend, so please let Pat know asap if you would like to come along. If you have any further questions please contact Pat directly.

Missing Incinerator

Our member, James on plot 43b, (The very last plot, opposite the Copse on the South side) is giving up his plot and has been tidying it up ready for the next new member. Sadly he has reported that his incinerator that was sitting on his plot has disappeared. If you can shed some light on where it might have gone, please can you contact me via the following link:

Thank you

Nick Lord (Chairman)

Working Party & Harvest Lunch

We have checked the weather forecast for Saturday and it does not look good, heavy rain and high winds. We have therefore taken the decision to cancel the plans for the Working Party and Lunch as there was little likelihood of being able to do any work on site. We are sorry for having to make this decision and although it is still a couple of days away we had to consider arrangements for food and make the decision early.

Chris our Site Manager has a list of jobs that need to be done around the site and is wanting to co-ordinate the work, however as the weather is starting to become very unpredictable, we cannot allocate another date for the working party. Therefore if you can contact Chris he will allocate individuals a task that they can carry out at their convenience when they are next on site. Chris’s email address is

Thank you.

Compost, Chippings and Working Party/Harvest Lunch

If you have been on site in the last week you will have seen that we have had deliveries of compost, located at either end of the site now. Yesterday we also had a delivery of wood chippings which is ideal material for pathways etc. We are very fortunate that these supplies are donated to the Society and so you as members are able to take advantage of these FREE materials. There is no guarantee that there will always be a supply of free compost etc and we are very lucky to have the contacts with the local horse owners and farmers who supply and deliver it.

I am sure everyone appreciates it and I hope if you can, you have signed up for the Harvest Lunch on SATURDAY (21st October) and the Working Party that will be going on around the lunch. The full details have already been published on previous posts and on Facebook. It is not too late to order your lunch, check back on previous posts for the menu and email the Secretary with you order.

The committee look forward to seeing you on Saturday and appreciate your support.

A  short reminder that the Allotments Open Day is on Sunday, the time we originally planned for was 12 noon until 4pm, however the banners that we have placed on the edge of the visit say 1 til 5pm! Sorry for any confusion, we will in all eventually be there from 12 o’clock and most likely be there til 5 o’clock! The most important time for members to be there if they are able to make it is around 3pm when we shall be awarding the prizes for the best plots. If you can be around for the rest of the afternoon I am sure you presence will be most welcome on site to talk to visitors or share some refreshments with your fellow members. We look forward to seeing you, your friends and family on Sunday.

Car Parking at East Entrance

We have received reports of members cars having punctures after parking on the  verge by the smaller gate entrance at the copse end of the site. This parking area was created from the old entrance to the site when it was a field, so it has not been surfaced in any way other than rough surfacing by members. Therefore care must be exercised when parking there and we would politely request that those members that use that end for access to keep the area clear of rubbish and remove any potential hazards that might give other members problems. Of course the Society cannot accept any responsibility for members vehicles or property using the entrance way. Thank you. Nick Lord, Chairman.

Quiz Night

Our apologies for the delay in this announcement regarding the quiz night booked for 19th March, we have already changed it once but due to circumstances beyond our control we are having to move it yet again!

We have also changed the venue to be sure that we can hold the event without any further changes and the new date and location is:

SATURDAY 16th APRIL at 7:30pm in The Village Hall, Hawkinge.

The cost will be £5.00 per person with teams of 6 people. Please bring your own food and drink to consume on the night. We will make tea and coffee available at a small extra charge. There will also be a raffle as well as lots of fun and laughter!

Once again our apologies to those few people who had booked a table for next week, but please would you rebook or book by contacting the Society’s Secretary at

Thank you

Quiz Night – Update

Please note that we have had to change the date of the quiz as the pub had double booked the room, probably due to the change of Landlord. so we are now holding it a week later on:
